Salem Peak – APRS IGate UTAHCO was recently introduced to the valley as a new APRS IGate serving Utah County and Eastern Utah. Equipment: - Kantronics KPC-3
- Kenwood TM-271
- Netgear 10/100 4 Port Network Switch
- Neoware Enterprise Thin Client
Software: The UTAHCO IGate presently operates on a Neoware Thin Client. Neoware produces thin-clients as corporate workstations; they’re built to provide minimal strain and stress on IT staff and lower operating costs. As these machines are primarily network boot devices, they also have the option for an internal hard drive. For our purposes we’re using a 1GB compact flash card. As these machines have no moving parts, a CF card was chosen. Our reliability goes up as there are no mechanical parts to fail and less time spent maintaining these systems. Thin-clients also provide for energy efficient operations. Drawing at most twenty watt’s it allows us to provide the most maximum uptime in the event we lose AC power and are forced to run on batteries. Power conservation among other things is critical to provide a high level of service in the event of an emergency. UTAHCO presently maintains a 24/7/365 day connection to aprswest.net. – The West Coast APRS Network Backbone. Software is provided by the open-source distribution APRSD development sponsored by Sourceforge.net. UTAHCO is presently set apart from 95% of any other IGate in the State of Utah at the time of writing. Powered by the Linux Operating System; Debian allowing us to maintain near 100% availability. Jonathan (K) serves Northern Utah with various Linux based IGate(s). Statistics: Between October 14th 2006 - December 30th 2006 - Collected & Transported 2.39 million packets
- Dropped 131,526 invalid packets
- Over 300 megabytes of data usage
